- Govt clears $5-bn airplane purchases

The new planes will arrive in a staggered delivery schedule beginning November. The acquisitions were cleared on August 30 at a meeting of a civil aviation ministry empowered committee.

Hero Honda, India's largest two-wheeler maker, could see a change in ownership as the Delhi-based Munjal family seeks to buy the stake held by partner Honda Motor Company of Japan in the joint venture. Cipla, the largest player in the domestic drug market, could play white knight for Cipla Medpro, South Africas third-largest drugmaker and a key ally of the Indian company. Cipla is looking to acquire around 25 per cent in the manufacturing division of Cipla Medpro, where it does not hold any stake at present. The deal size could not be ascertained, but it will be the first overseas acquisition by 75-year-old Cipla in any pharmaceutical company.

- DTC lightens evasion penalties
While the tax burden for an average taxpayer will lighten marginally, for tax evaders the Direct Taxes Code (DTC) proposes to reduce penalties substantially. The DTC Bill, tabled in Parliament on Monday, proposes that anyone under-reporting their tax base would have to pay a maximum penalty of two times the tax sought to be evaded.
